About the workshop

Developing Self-Compassion and Self-Acceptance in Neurodivergent Adults

From chronic burnout to living a valued life

You'll learn why standard anxiety treatment so often fails autistic and ADHD clients – and what to build instead, using a structured process grounded in compassion-focused therapy and adapted for neurodivergent minds.

Neurodivergent adults are more exposed to trauma, rejection and repeated negative feedback, which drives chronic self-criticism, shame and worse mental health. Many live in a state of chronic burnout – exhaustion and overwhelm that builds up from trying to meet neurotypical standards in environments that don't account for sensory, social and information-processing differences.

While recent research has started treating „autistic burnout” as its own experience, distinct from depression and anxiety, ADHD adults can burn out too – and both groups benefit from learning to prevent and recover from it before it damages their mental and physical health, relationships, work and home life.

Jennifer Kemp is a clinical psychologist in Adelaide, Australia – and she brings more than clinical expertise to this topic. She was diagnosed autistic after her own child’s assessment, then diagnosed with ADHD eighteen months later. That lived experience runs through the whole workshop: from the „spiky profile” of strengths and difficulties that makes functioning labels („high/low functioning”) misleading, to why a client who is „so good to talk to” can still be missed for years.

You’ll work through six genetic, neurobiological differences that shape how autistic clients experience the world – monotropism (deep, narrow-focus attention and special interests, or „SPINs”), sensory hyper- and hyposensitivity, interoception (awareness of internal body states), emotion processing and alexithymia, self-regulation and stimming, and differences in language and social-information processing. Once you understand these, you’ll understand why your „difficult” clients aren’t responding to standard treatment – and what to do instead.

Neurodivergent adults tend to have lower self-compassion, while higher self-compassion is linked to better mental health and stronger emotion regulation. This interactive workshop shows you how to help clients relieve and prevent burnout through a structured therapy process that builds wellbeing on a foundation of compassion for oneself.

Who it's for

Who this workshop is for

Therapists and psychologists working with autistic or ADHD adults

You have clients whose "generalized anxiety" or social anxiety doesn't budge with standard exposure-based treatment – and you suspect there's more going on. About 80% of autistic adult women are undiagnosed and still showing up in your caseload.

Clinicians who want confident, in-session screening – not a diagnosis course

You want practical screening tools you can use in-session to build genuine confidence that a client is autistic or ADHD, before referring them for a second, affirming opinion. This isn't training in formal diagnostic assessment.

Neurodivergent professionals

You're autistic or ADHD yourself, and you want tools for your own self-compassion and burnout prevention alongside what you take away for your clients.

Recommended: a working understanding of neurodiversity-affirming practice

This workshop doesn't cover the basics of neurodiversity vs. neurodivergence, affirming language, or diagnostic criteria – that groundwork is covered in Jennifer's earlier workshop, "Working with Neurodivergent Clients: What Therapists Need to See." You don't have to have taken it, but you'll get the most out of this one if you're already comfortable with the fundamentals.

Outcomes

What you'll learn

You'll be able to...

  • define autistic and ADHD burnout, and explain how building self-compassion skills improves mental health and wellbeing for neurodivergent clients
  • describe how neurodivergent differences in information processing interact with environmental demands to cause burnout
  • recognize the "spiky profile" of strengths and difficulties behind labels like "high-functioning" – and why those labels do harm

You'll know how to...

  • set immediate therapy priorities to relieve and prevent burnout, and build a structured long-term plan for wellbeing
  • read a client's sensory and interoceptive profile – including alexithymia – to reframe anxiety that hasn't responded to standard treatment
  • adapt therapy to a neurodivergent client's actual preferences, instead of defaulting to repeated exposure that just fuels burnout

You'll practice...

  • applying burnout-relief and self-compassion strategies that support a values-based life
  • helping clients build safe relationships and self-advocacy skills – including how to ask for what they need and say no
  • using these same tools for yourself, if you're neurodivergent

Agenda

What we'll cover

  1. Autism and ADHD beyond the DSM

The six neurobiological differences behind the "spiky profile": monotropism and SPINs, sensory hyper/hyposensitivity, interoception, emotion processing and alexithymia, self-regulation and stimming, and social/language processing – and why "functioning labels" cause real harm.

  2. Why "just push through it" doesn't work

A case discussion on a client whose social anxiety looks textbook, but is actually driven by sensory overload – and why repeated exposure just accelerates burnout instead of building tolerance.

  3. Defining and recognizing burnout

What separates autistic and ADHD burnout from depression and anxiety, and how to set immediate treatment priorities.

  4. Building self-compassion, step by step

A structured, compassion-focused process adapted specifically for neurodivergent clients, including how to work with alexithymia.

  5. From surviving to living a valued life

Safe relationships, self-advocacy and building a life around a client's own spiky profile of strengths.
