ABOUT THE TRAINING

HOW TO USE ACT WHEN WORKING WITH PAIN AND LOSS IN THERAPY

A client is facing a painful loss, while psychological distress completely overwhelms them. Their mind generates harsh judgments, the autonomic nervous system shifts into a traumatic shutdown response, and they lose contact with the here and now.

You will learn how to help them drop anchor in the middle of the storm and cope with overwhelming tension. You will discover how to change the context of toxic thoughts so that they stop ruining the client’s life, and when imposing positive thinking may do more harm than good.

Life and pain go hand in hand, and a major loss inevitably triggers strong reactions in the nervous system. This training focuses on working with people who are experiencing a painful reality slap within the ACT model, while also developing self-compassion in the client. During the training, you will explore the concept of dropping anchor and deepen your understanding of the role of connecting with the body and surrounding world as a pathway out of psychological distress. You will learn how to distinguish fight-or-flight reactions from extreme traumatic shutdown, what to pay attention to when introducing grounding exercises, and how to show the client that their pain is part of the shared human experience. Instead of searching for artificial positivity with phrases such as “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” you will learn how to safely guide the client through their values while they are in the midst of suffering. You will gain practical knowledge combining the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy with body-based work, including therapeutic metaphors, exercises involving the physical release of emotions, and ready-to-use protocols for rebuilding contact with the here and now from the very first minutes of a therapy session

WHO IS IT FOR?

Who is this training for?

Psychotherapists working with sudden crises within the ACT approach

You are looking for ways to work with clients after a painful collision with reality, commonly referred to as a "reality slap." You want to learn how to effectively change the context of painful thoughts and help clients move out of the "psychological fog" of rumination and return to the here and now.

Professionals working with major loss and profound shutdown

You work with clients whose nervous system has responded to loss with fight, flight, or traumatic shutdown. You want to help them develop self-compassion while avoiding hurtful, toxic messages such as "what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger."

Practitioners looking for safe grounding tools

You know that traditional eyes-closed meditation may carry a significant risk of retraumatization for clients who have been through severe experiences. You are looking for simple physical grounding exercises that introduce movement and safely reconnect the client with their body and surroundings, and that can be used from the very first session.

Prerequisite: willingness to work with the here and now and to change the context of thoughts

During the training, I will show you how to integrate the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) into work with overwhelming, paralyzing pain. I will refer to specific therapeutic interventions such as defusion, reconnecting with the body, and the concept of common humanity, which helps normalize the client’s experience of suffering. This training is a collection of practical tools designed to immediately reduce the impact of toxic thoughts on behavior, rather than simply presenting abstract theory.

OUTCOMES

What you will learn

You will learn how to...

  • understand how the nervous system responds to sudden loss, including fight, flight, and extreme shutdown mechanisms.
  • change the context of painful thoughts in order to reduce their toxic impact on behavior without trying to artificially eliminate them.
  • introduce the concept of common humanity to normalize the client’s suffering and reduce feelings of isolation.

You will discover...

  • the concept of “psychological fog” and proven protocols for helping clients move from rumination back into engagement with the here and now.
  • the physical “wringing out emotions” paper metaphor, which illustrates the cost of struggling with pain and teaches clients how to gently make space for it.
  • the dropping anchor method (ACE protocol) as a safe alternative to meditation that effectively minimizes the risk of retraumatization.

You will be able to...

  • quickly ground a highly activated client through safe activation of the body and senses from the very first minutes of a session.
  • help clients withstand an emotional storm while supporting them in building a life based on their values despite intense suffering.
  • support clients without imposing hurtful “positive thinking”, replacing it with deep self-compassion in the face of painful loss.

Program

Workshop Outline

  1. Reality Slap - anatomy of anemotional storm

An overview of how clients respond to painful loss and why imposing toxic forms of "positive thinking" can do more harm than good.

  2. The nervous system in the face of sudden Ccisis

An introduction to how the nervous system responds to pain, including an exploration of fight, flight, and extreme traumatic shutdown.

  3. Emerging from the psychological fog

Understand how rumination disconnects people from life. You will learn how to use a physical dropping-anchor protocol to safely bring clients back into contact with the here and now.

  4. Self-Compassion as a response to paralyzing suffering

A practical application of the concept of common humanity. You will learn how to help clients develop the supportive attitude of a kind and caring friend, even in the midst of intense pain.

  5. Practical metaphors and changing the context of thoughts

Work with specific examples. This module includes instructions for a physical "wringing out emotions" metaphor using paper, as well as techniques designed to reduce the toxic impact of thoughts on everyday behavior.
